2014 “The Fortress” (Port Style Wine)
Varietal: 100% Touriga Nacional
Vineyard: Bethel Road
Region: Templeton Gap, Westside Paso Robles
Bottle Size: 750ml
The Fortress is a fortified, sweet Port styled wine. We utilized 100% Touriga Nacional, arguably Portugal’s most revered varietal and used extensively in the production of Porto. Our experience with Touriga has been that it has an extremely spicy flavor even when very ripe. We halted the fermentation by adding brandy (distilled from Shirah barrels that we felt were not worthy of bottling as high end boutique wine) to the still quite sweet fermenting Touriga must. The wine is about 21% alcohol and was barrel aged in neutral oak for around 18 months and bottle aged for almost 3 years.
